IFC Gains More Industry Support!

We are pleased to welcome Bentley Systems Australia as a new corporate member. This is good news for support of the IFC protocols and we look forward to their contributions in due course.

Graphisoft ArchiCAD New Release 13

Graphisoft released their latest version of ArchiCAD in a series of seminars around Australia highlighting their new Active BIM Server technology which transforms collaborative model building. For full details see here

Of equal interest to buildingSMART was their updated commitment to the IFC format for example for structural and building services model collaboration.

Next Year - 4D/5D Workshop

At the National Conference there was unanimous support for another buildingSMART conference in 2010. We will keep you posted of details.

4D/5D Workshop Feb 2010

Matthew Boot of Bovis Lend Lease has confirmed his participation in a workshop on 4D/5D to be held in Sydney, 25 Feb 2010. Put this date in your diary for this focus on using the model to support constrcution scheduling , estimating, buildability etc. More details in the New Year

International BIM Events

Rhonda Bulmer (formerly of CADway Design) in Brisbane advised she is organising participation in the US based BIM Storm. Build Hospital Live - BIMStorm, has started in Oslo, Norway on Sept. 22 - 24 and concludes in Washington D.C. at the Ecobuild Conference on Dec. 8 - 10, 2009. Contact Rhonda if you are interested in being part of the Team.

We also noted that the UK Chapter have delayed their London Live BIM. "Build London Live 2009 is set on a hypothetical man-made island in the Thames Gateway, and being larger scale than BLL 2008, it is paramount to have enough teams to create BIMs for the master plan if we are to generate the media interest that will benefit us all and attract sponsors".

The organising committee has therefore decided to delay the event which will now take place over 48 hours on 15th 16th & 17th December. Be in it!

Continuing initiatives by buildingSMART Australasia:

BEIC BIM Working Group

buildingSMART is a member of this working group, established by Minister Kim Carr through the Built Environment Innovation Council (BEIC

). Several meetings have been held and buildingSMART's

draft proposal for a formal economic study on the benefits of openBIM to support industry innovation in Local Government, facility development and GHG reduction has been tabled. The draft is available for download here. Currently sponsors to support the cost of the study are being sought from the construction industry associations with several - AIA, Natspec, buildingSMART, DIISR - already committed.

This is a key study that will determine the poductivity gains BIM technology could sustain. If your industry organisation is willing to to support this initiave contact the BEIC Secretariat or John Mitchell

Product Information

buildingSMART has identified the importance of rich product data for BIM users. It is working with product manufacturers, Government and Industry to create product information in an open object format that can support the Industry's takeup of BIM.

buildingSMART's goal is to assist product manufacturers convert their disparate product information into objects that are accurate 3D representations, have rich data describing key physical, performance and commercial properties and be in a format that all relevant parties of the Built Environment can share from inception to operations and management.

We note that this subject is one of the Virtual Built Environment CRC submission at present under consideration and we endorse the importance of a national solution for product information.
